Fringe Theater presents THE GULF
exploration of the unsung voices and stories of working class people in the Gulf Coast region
Fringe Theater presents southern playwright Audrey Cefaly’s award-winning play The Gulf, June 1-
3 at 7pm and June 7 and 8 at 5:30pm at the Key West Armory, located at 600 White Street.
The Gulf is the first installment in Cefaly’s Alabama Cycle, a four-play exploration of the unsung
voices and stories of working class people in the Gulf Coast region. The Gulf is also the winner of
the 40 th Annual Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival and the winner of the Lambda
Literary Award for Southern LGBTQ Drama.
The premise of the play is simple. Two women on a boat. One woman fishes. One woman reads.
But what unfolds is a complicated look at the intimacy and compromises required for a relationship
to endure. Betty and Kendra fight, make up, make out, and fight again.
“It’s a fascinating look inside a flawed but loving relationship. Two people in a confined space,
facing truth and consequences,” says Rebecca Tomlinson, Fringe’s Managing Artistic Director and
director of The Gulf. “It is a beautifully written script that builds through actor intention more than
plot. So the real heart of the play is found in how these two women create an emotional push/pull
between them.”
The Gulf stars local actors Sarah Goodwin as the introspective Kendra and Jillian Todd as the
outgoing Betty.
Sarah Goodwin began her theater career as an intern at a professional theater when she was fifteen.
She moved to Key West almost 20 years ago and works as an eco-tour guide when she’s not
rescuing animals for the wildlife center.
Jillian Todd got involved in theater through school programs and summer camps. She visited Key
West as a guest performer at the Waterfront Playhouse and stayed! Jillian and can be found (guitar
in hand) singing at live music venues throughout the island.
Creating the theatrical setting for The Gulf is Fringe’s design team Aramis Ikatu, Kendall Cameron,
and Su Nubia. The show’s stage manager is Samantha Laskey, and Fringe’s box office manager is
Vanessa McCaffrey. The Key West Business Guild is the show’s sponsor.
The Gulf runs June 1-3 at 7pm at the Key West Armory with encore Happy Hour performances
scheduled June 7 and 8 at 5:30pm in conjunction with the Key West Pride celebration. Tickets are
